On Friday, March 8, the Group 4 Fireside Meeting was held at “Yoshiza” in Kioicho, with 12 participants.
Following a toast by Member 小川 and greetings from President 伊豆, each participant spoke on this meeting's theme, “My Thoughts on Our Club's Service Activities.”
Our club carries out a wide range of service, from international projects such as founding an elementary school in Cambodia and digging wells in Nepal, to locally rooted activities such as donating disposable diapers to Futaba Infant Home and blood donation drives. This deserves high praise.
On the other hand, service that only involves giving money, such as donations to The Rotary Foundation or the PolioPlus Fund, is invisible and hard to feel connected to. Perhaps we could hold hands-on service activities, where we all physically take part, a few times a year.
For example, blood donation is something money cannot do. Hands-on service activities with visible results, such as the Mt. Fuji clean-up, tree planting at elementary schools, and the Disaster Prevention Education and Music Gathering, have left a lasting impression.
We all agreed that “service activities are the very reason Rotary exists, and contributing to society through service is the direction we aim for.”
Finally, Member 是枝 gave a closing summary, and the meeting ended with a traditional single clap (ippon-jime) led by Secretary 吉田.
