【Summary】

“Japan was once the world leader.” In 2014, about 70% of the world’s bitcoin trading
went through Mt. Gox, an exchange based in Shibuya, Tokyo.
Japan was the global center of the crypto-asset and blockchain industry.
However, after a series of incidents and a crypto-asset tax rate of up to 55%—said to be the strictest in the world—
Web3 companies moved out to Singapore and Dubai.
Having lost the global race in search, social media and smartphones in the internet era, Japan
was about to repeat the same mistake with crypto-assets.
In 2025, however, the tide turned dramatically. Under the slogan “Japan is back again,”
the government, local authorities and the private sector all began to move. Income tax on crypto-assets was historically changed
to a flat 20% separate taxation. In addition, the yen stablecoin “JPYC” was approved by the Financial Services Agency and its cumulative issuance exceeded 2.2 billion yen within six months—two major waves arriving at the same time.
In this talk, from the perspective of a tax accountant and certified public accountant, I will cover in 30 minutes the basics of crypto-assets and blockchain, the key points of the tax reform, the significance of the yen stablecoin “JPYC,” and their impact on our lives and businesses, including regional revitalization, international remittances and new forms of fundraising.
The talk will be useful both for those who invest and for those thinking about Japan’s economy in the years ahead.
